In Sanskrit, compound words (samāsa) are heavily used in sutras. How you break the sandhi determines the type of compound, which directly dictates the gender of the word.

Tatpuruṣa vs. Bahuvrīhi:

  • If you split a compound as a Tatpuruṣa (noun + noun), the final compound takes the gender of the last word.
  • If you split it as a Bahuvrīhi (an adjective-like compound describing someone else), the entire compound shifts its gender to match the person or object it is describing.

Why Commentaries Matter

Because one string of sandhi letters can be split in multiple grammatically valid ways, ancient scholars wrote massive commentaries (Bhāṣyas) just to debate where the word breaks should be. A single split can alter the entire philosophical direction of a school of thought.
